Smart beer mat orders refills

A beer mat that knows when a glass is nearly empty and automatically asks for a refill has been created by thirsty researchers in Germany.

Andreas Butz at the University of Munich and Michael Schmitz from Saarland University came up with the idea while out drinking with their students.

The disc-shaped mat can be attached to a normal beer mat so that it still soaks up spilt liquid and displays an advertisement. But it also contains a pressure sensor and radio transmitter to alert bar staff of the need for a refill.

The device weighs 110 grams and costs $100 to make, but Butz and Schmitz think the weight and cost would shrink if the mat were to be mass-produced.

They say the mat could also be used for interactive TV events, as it contains an accelerometer capable of sensing when it is being waved in the air.

"I've been discussing this with a friend of mine who is an expert pub goer," Butz told New Scientist. "He mentioned that the pay-TV companies who broadcast soccer games are desperately looking for ways to make TV an interactive experience. Betting on actual sports events with the mat could add such interactivity."

The researchers believe the smart mat could even be used in pub games: "One important direction which needs further investigation is the large body of drinking games which has developed in certain cultures and how they can be supported using our beer mat."

UW-Madison top party school

The University of Wisconsin-Madison topped the list of the nation's party schools Monday despite a decade-long effort by school officials to reduce its reputation for heavy drinking.

UW-Madison has ranked among the top party schools on the annual Princeton Review report in 13 out of the 14 years it has compiled the list and was No. 3 a year ago. Meanwhile, Brigham Young University was tops among "stone cold sober" schools for the eighth straight year.

UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley dismissed the report as "junk science that results in a day of national media coverage." But the chairman of the campus student government said many students would take pride in the ranking considering its other reputation as a top academic institution.

U.S. News and World Report ranked UW-Madison No. 34 among national universities in its annual survey last week.

"It just shows that we work hard but we play hard also," said Eric Varney, chair of the Associated Students of Madison.

The list _ which is not affiliated with Princeton University _ is based on on-line surveys of more than 110,000 college students and included in the Princeton Review's "Best 361 Colleges."

The top party schools rankings are based on survey responses regarding alcohol and drug use, hours of study each day, and the number of students in fraternities and sororities.

Schools often put down the list, while the American Medical Association has urged Princeton Review to cease putting it out, saying it legitimizes students' drinking.

But Robert Franek, who authored the report "The Best 361 Colleges," said students are looking for more than just a classroom experience when they pick a college.

"The mission is very simple _ to provide information to make the college search palatable for a student and all of them to find a school that's the best fit for them," he said.

UW-Madison has long had a reputation for heavy drinking, ranking No. 3 this year for the amount of beer and hard liquor consumed. Still, the school touts its nine-year program to cut down on binge drinking they it says had led to a drop in students who drink to excess, fewer admissions to local detoxification centers and more freshman who say they don't drink at all.

"We're not trying to tell students that they can't drink at all, but they really do need to learn how to drink responsibly," said Susan Crawley, who heads the effort.

Still, the school's reputation has been hard to shake. Its annual spring party drew 20,000 revelers this year, while Halloween weekend has been marred by riots the last two years as thousands have descended upon the city.

Senior Liz Drilias lunched Monday at the student union, where the school has a bar and had the beer taps open by noon. She said the ranking was no surprise but no source of pride, either.

"People get a bad image of Madison, that we just drink all the time," Drilias said. "There are people who are like that, but there are just as many people who aren't."

there, thats kinda how im feeling. i think there might be a PROBLEM.

it might be a bit long to read but want you to understand whats happening and get your advice. also i know this is a minor problem compared to when some of yous come here for advice for life problems. im sorry.

as you know, my computer is one of the crappiest here. i got it as a gift from my granparents about 4 years ago, a few months before pentium 4 came out. it gets 3 frames a second on cs1.6 at 800x600. when it was bought, i wasnt a real computer nerd yet, but my grandpa said it was 'top of the line' and there was nothing better. that may have been true back then with the excetpion of the video card. i dont know. its 900mhz pentium III with intigrated vid card, came with 128 mb ram, and a 40gb hard drive. dont know mobo specs. its an HP. although it is kinda mine as i am the main user, this computer replaced the old family clunker and is my familys only computer. we all use it. and it sucks. perhiperils are all sticky and the mouse broke from my little sister. got a new opticle mouse and its almost done for too. im the only one in the family that really knows how to use it anyway and my dad blames me on just about every problem, even ones that i have no control of, such as the fact that windows ME slows down after use.

now, my grandpa (he bought this remember) had an old computer and all he does is stuff for business. all he really did was use it to type documents on microsoft word, save them into the my documents folder, send and recieve email, and occasionally do some stuff online. thats it. a few months ago, like back in november or december i think, he decided that he needed to upgrade (i dont think he did because he didnt hardly use it as he isnt a computer person). well he knows i am a computer person, but didnt tell me he was going to buy a new computer. he just bought a dell, i dont know the exact specs, but its really more than he needs. its got a intel pentium 4 with hyper threading. and i think 512mb ram. a flatscreen monitor. wireless keyboard and mouse. its even got an upgraded video card (its still only a cheap one though). now he thinks its great but doesnt know what all that stuff is for. see, the ONLY game he plays on it is solitare that comes with it. he isnt a gamer AT ALL. and he doesnt run any big apps either. just the stuff he did before with IE and microsoft word. thats it. so he really dosent need a pentium with hyper threading or that much ram or a video card (gee, i think it was a radion 200) thats not intigrated.

so, i asked him why he got it. including monitor, printer, and perhiperils, it cost over $1000. now, i know that for him its a lot, but for most of you gamers, its not really a gameing machien. thats teh problme. when i asked him why he got it, he said he had me in mind when he did. i also assume its because he is getting older and wanted to get something thats more than he needs while he still can. he ordered it from dell. i played the hl2 demo on it, and even with most of the settings medium or low, with none on high, and at 1024x768 resolution, i didnt like it. slow framerate, and very stuttery. it would also often freeze for a while and take forever to load. now here's where the problem starts to come in: he thinks its a great computer. and as i said, he doesnt know computers but he knows i do like computers. and he knows my computer is crap. he said to me that maybe he will buy one for me before i go to colledge. then he said maybe next year he will get me one. my grandpa recently retired, so his budget has gotten a bit tighter.

now, my birthday is on aguust 11. in the past, its kinda been my grandparents tradition to give me $100. today they came over for a quick visit. usually they talk about my birthday to me before it happens but they didnt mention it so i reminded my grandpa that my birthday was in a few days. jokeingly, he said 'oh we are kinda tight on money so we'll just be forgetting about it this year' with a smile. then before he left he told my grandpa that i reminded him of it and jokeingly asked me how i was with just forgetting about my birthday this year. then, my grandma said that they had a surprise for me. this is when i kinda started to worry. 4 or 5 years ago when before they gave me my (or should i say my familys) current computer for christmas, they said that they had a surprise for me. now i know this doesnt mean anything concrete, but i am hopeing that they dont give me a computer. most likely it will be a dell like my grandpas. if i were to get a computer, i would want to save up maybe 5000, and build myself a decent one. also, in a few months, the next version of windows is comeing out (someone remind me of when exactly), and the next generation of graphic cards are comeing out (someone tell me when in the ballpark that might happen), and also pentium 4 has been around for a while, so when will pentium 5 come out? so not only would i be getting a computer that i dont really want because that would keep me from getting one that i do want, but i think if it just waited about 6 months it would be so much better and not obsolete already. and my grandparents would think this is a great gift and i dont know what to say if in fact, it does turn out to be a computer.
i wouldnt want to make my grandparents spend 5000 bucks either.

so what do you think i should do if on my b-day i do get that surprise, and how long do you think it will take for windows longhorn, the next generation of pc grahpics cards, and the next generation of pentiums to come out?

What we heard: By far, the biggest stir this week was caused by a (uses fingers) "leaked" mockup of the Playstation 3, which surfaced on GameSpot's own forums. While next-gen mockups are nothing new, this latest one's detail earned it more attention that previous would-be PS3s. Reportedly taken from an E3 pamphlet, the black matte and chrome console looked very slick indeed, sharing a similar design to the PSP. However, the product page sported a few features that had RC's spider sense tingling. Most damning was its mention of having "PS3 / PSP UMD MediaMove" functionality, meaning the device would have a built-in UMD burner. Besides adding to the hardware cost of the unit, a built-in UMD burner would go against Sony's push to make consumers use the Memory Stick Duo for writeable media. Also suspicious is its lack of wireless-controller-activity indicators and the fact the console looks a lot like a Photoshopped version of the video projector pictured directly underneath it. And won't Sony have some kind of snazzy new logo for the device?

Description: Pregame took about a half hour, as we were waiting for a 5th Moderator to connect. As a last resort, we contacted Waldo (an Admin) to play for the Mod team. He agreed, and went to go update his CS:S. Upon entering, he recieved a phone call. This occupied his time enough to force him to leave. The mods asked us to proceed 4v5. Boy was that a mistake! The Forumites murdered the Moderators during the first half. Second half the Moderators had the t-side advantage, and Blinxx had to leave half way through. The Forumites managed to hold their own as we defended our bases. We (the Forumites) ended up winning both halfs and were victorious in our intentions! Good game to all!

Epic Games' demonstration of its next-generation graphics engine causes a buzz in San Francisco.

The public first got a glimpse of Unreal Engine 3 at last year's Game Developers Conference. But back then, the technology was still in its infancy, meaning the presenters from Epic Games only showed off tightly scripted demos with very little interaction in them.

What a difference a year makes.

Epic is back at GDC this year showing the latest and newest features of the engine, along with whole new tech demos that can only be described as jaw-dropping. Epic Vice President Mark Rein told us that the next-generation of PC and console hardware dovetail very nicely with Unreal Engine 3, and that it takes full advantage of what those platforms will have to offer. If what was only display was any indication, the future of gaming looks very good indeed.

Unfortunately, Epic isn't releasing video of the demos yet. The first demo shown involved a squad of futuristic, sci-fi soldiers patrolling the ruins of a bombed-out town or village. The town is almost medieval in nature, as the buildings are made of stone and covered in ivy. Suddenly, the squad leader stops the patrol, sensing something is wrong. As if on cue, aliens open fire from the upper floors of several buildings, and the troops scatter. It's at this point those present realized with some awe they were seeing actual live gameplay, as the demonstrator was controlling one of the soldiers as he fired his rifle at the aliens.

The second demo showed off one of the newly-announced features of Unreal Engine 3--seamless level loading. Basically, the engine is capable of loading several levels simultaneously, so the game will analyze where a player is going and load the next level ahead of time. By the time you reach the new level, it will already be in memory. This means that, after the initial load to start a game, players will not experience any level loading at all. To demonstrate this, Epic showed a futuristic dune buggy driving through the streets of what looks like a gritty European city. (If anything, it looked very much like a far more detailed version of Half-Life 2's City 17.) The buggy careened through the empty streets and then cut across a park, and it did so seamlessly. This means that in addition to no level loads, the game will be capable of creating huge, Grand Theft Auto-like worlds to explore. To finish the buggy demo, the camera pulled back to reveal a glimpse of a stunning and crowded cityscape along with the glistening waters of a huge bay.

The next parts of the demonstration showed off technology from last year, but for the developers in the room it was were important. Epic is working very hard to make Unreal Engine 3 to be as developer-friendly as possible, because the company recognizes that the costs to make next-generation games will be considerable, and one way to reduce development costs is to give game makers easy-to-use and powerful tools. As such, Unreal Engine 3 comes with very developer-friendly editing tools, such as Kismet, which is a visual script editor that gives artists the ability to create intricate and complex scripted actions with relative ease. Another comparison between Unreal Engine 3 and earlier versions of the Unreal engine is that Unreal Engine 2 required programmers to write 90-pecent of the shaders used in a game, whereas Unreal Engine 3 will only require 5-percent of shader code to actually be written by programmers. The other 95-percent are already incorporated in the engine, where artists can take full advantage of it.

Physics are also going to be a huge feature of Unreal Engine 3, especially as new technologies such as multi-core CPUs and dedicated physics processors emerge on the next-generation of consoles and PCs. The sheer amount of computing power will allow for far more interaction with the environment. To demonstrate this, Epic showed an Unreal Engine 3 demo in which boulders rolled down a hill. In Unreal Tournament 2003, the engine could calculate and display about 10 boulders rolling down a hill at a time. Unreal Tournament 2004 increased that number to about 20. Both of those combined are nowhere close to the number of physical objects that Unreal Engine 3 can handle at the same time. To illustrate this, an avalanche of more than 600 boulders rolled down the hill, each reacting realistically to collisions and each casting its own shadow.

So when can we expect Unreal Engine 3 to begin appearing in games? While Rein couldn't speak for their third-party partners, he said that he expects the first Epic PC game based on the engine to ship sometime early next year.

An even more pressing question is the kind of hardware you will require to run Unreal Engine 3 games. Next-generation consoles will have no problems with Unreal Engine 3 games, but PC gamers don't need to worry, according to Rein. He said that a video card based on an Nvidia 6600GT, the kind currently available for around $250, will be able to handle games based on the engine easily. However, by the time any games based on Unreal Engine 3 ship next year, those cards will have dropped in price considerably, meaning that PC gamers won't drop big bucks on upgrades.

Epic also acknowledged that there are already several third-party projects underway using Unreal Engine 3, including at least one online role-playing game.

DirectX Tweaker

The DXTweaker allows Radeon-Users using up to 4xOGSSAA under Windows! Due to Radeon's hardware-limitations it's only possible up to 1024x768, but still a big improvement I think. Furthermore SSAA-Support is currently limited to applications that make use of DX8 or higher. DX7 is in development. But the tweaker is able to do many more things, Alpha-Test-AA for example.Very nice thing in my opinion. ATi doesn't include SSAA to their drivers, so nonatainment did.

CPU - Xenon's CPU has three 3.0 GHz PowerPC cores. Each core is capable of two instructions per cycle and has an L1 cache with 32 KB for data and 32 KB for instructions. The three cores share 1 MB of L2 cache. Alpha 2 developer kits currently have two cores instead of three.

GPU - Xenon's GPU is a generation beyond the ATI X800. Its clock speed is 500 MHz and it supports Shader 3.0. Developers are currently working with an alpha 2 GPU. Beta GPU units are expected by May and the final GPU is slated for a summer release. The final GPU will be more powerful than anything on the market today; in game terms, it would handle a game like Half-Life 2 with ease.

System Memory - Xenon will have 256 MB of system RAM. Keep in mind that this number should not be equated to typical PC RAM. The Xbox has 64 MB of system RAM and is a very capable machine.

Optical Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The drive is slated to run at 12X.

Memory Units - Xenon will use 64 MB to 1,024 MB memory cards. 8 MB is reserved for system use, leaving a 56 MB to 1,016 MB for user data.

Hard Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon's hard drive is optional. 2 GB of the drive will be used as game cache. The final drive size is still being determined.

Camera - Xenon will have a USB 2.0 camera. It's capable of 1.2 megapixel still shots and VGA video. Photos can be used in-game and for gamer profiles. The camera can also be used for video chat. It's unknown if the Xenon camera will allow for EyeToy-like gameplay. Developers are currently using a simulated camera driver.

Sound Chip - Xenon does not have an audio chip in the traditional sense. Decompression is handled by hardware, while the rest of the chores are handled by software. DirectSound3D has been dropped in favor of X3DAudio. The former was deemed too inflexible.

Running COSBI OpenSourceMark Version 1.0 Beta 6
While we released the source code to OSMark v1.0 beta 6 yesterday (along with code for several other tools), if you just want to run the benchmark, click on the link above to download the zipped executable. To run OSMark, just unzip the file while preserving its directory structure and then double-click on "CosbiOpenSourceMark.exe". In order to generate and overall score, you'll need to click on the "Official Run" button.

As promised, click on the above link to download the full source code for COSBI OSMark (~34MB). Also included is the source code for several utilities and standalone tools like BandwidthBurn, MemLatencyPlus, WhetBurn, CPUSpeed and others. Everything is released under GPL.

OSMark v1.0 beta 6 is compiled in Delphi 7, but should be easily upgradeable to Delphi 2005.

You will need to install the Graphics32 libraries in order to compile OSMark.

There are coding instructions in the OSMark subdirectory under the filename "OSMarkCodingDocumentation.html". These instructions will be posted and expanded upon in the COSBI OSMark Forums.

Speaking of the forums, Flickerdown Data Systems has agreed to host the official COSBI forums. Here you will be able to find out how to run OSMark, learn tips and tricks and post your scores.

But most importantly, you can request new tests, post your source code for new tests, participate in the COSBI development process, or examine pending source code updates.

The objective of the Comprehensive Open Source Benchmarking Initiative is to be completely inclusive. This means that no tests will be rejected unless they are redundant or clearly useless. Even in those cases, you can still post your source code and make a case for your test on the forums.

Although the GUI is written in Delphi 7, tests can be submitted in any language that does not require runtime libraries. See "OSMarkCodingDocumentation.html" for an example of how to incorporate executables written in other languages.

We'll also be introducing parallel projects in Kylix, and cross platform efforts in C++ (namely g++). We've also got a few application level benchmarks developed in Visual Test that will soon debut.

Over the following weeks, more details and updates will be posted here and at the forums.

RUMOURS are all abuzz that the search outfit Google is sitting down and writing its own operating system. The rumour started on http://www.scripting.com/ and is based on nothing other than the fact that the writer Dave Winer thinks it odd that Google has hired Microsoft’s operating system architect, Mark Lucovsky.

Winer reasons that they wouldn’t hire someone like that just to make the tea. Fair enough, if an OS is on the drawing board, chances are it would be based on something Vole has already done anyway, thus Lucovsky’s skills would be required.

But then what would Google want with an OS? Alternatively Lucovsky could just make very good tea, which is an asset in any organisation.

March 2, 2005 - A bill under consideration in Washington state would hold videogame developers accountable for violent acts ostensibly inspired by a particular game.

Currently under review by the state legislature, House Bill 2178 would hold game retailers and manufacturers accountable for "injury or wrongful death" committed by a person under age 17, if the game "was a factor in creating conditions that assisted or encouraged" the perpetrator.

While the bill is still in committee stage and far from becoming law, its dramatic interpretation of criminal responsibility reflects growing concern and controversy about the effects of violent video games.

Seattle ABC affiliate KOMO quotes bill supporter Bill Hanson of the Washington Police and Sheriff's Association: "If you sit up and watch this and play these games over and over again... it seems that this is alright to walk up and hit a police officer over the head with a bat."

Needless to say, opponents of the bill point out that it simply shifts blame away from the person who actually commits a crime. Further, the connection between violent videogames and actual violence -- the controversy parallels a similar furor over violent films and television -- remains tentative at best.

Games sold in the United States carry ESRB rating codes warning parents of potentially objectionable material. Especially violent games are rated "M" for Mature, and are not intended for minors.
